Young Members Education Course Uptake

The RMT young members AGM course took place in Torquay this year, we were able to accommodate approximately 10 young members and it was a very successful event. Report can be found here: http://www.rmtlondoncalling.org.uk/youngmembers

The London transport region was well represented, comprising about a half of the delegates on the course and from cleaner, driver, station assistant, station supervisor grades and also an excellent representation of ethnicities.

However women and female LGBT young members from the London transport industry were not represented (though represented nationally on the course), this is not due to the young members group being women free but the majority of female young member activists having done the course before (you can only go on the course once.) Thus women who are new to the union and activism within the union are not getting involved in young member education courses.

The RMT have a proud history of investing in its young members, there are many opportunities throughout the year for young members who are no more than 30years old to access educational courses and development opportunities.

Please can all branch sec’s, officials, reps and activists continue the great work that they have been doing in ensuring that the young members group is representative of the union, that young members are getting involved in the unions education courses, that young members education courses are well promoted and in particular encourage young women of all grades to get involved.

The next young members education course will be the Burston strike school 31 August-2nd September 2012; please get forms in asap so we can book hotel rooms. The circular and application form is attached.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.
