Massive support received for RMT/TSSA campaign against LUL cuts

RMT has received massive support and solidarity messages for the campaign against cuts on London Underground:

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber has thrown the weight of entire Labour movement behind our action, he has said: “Workers on the tube are understandably concerned that the cuts proposed for the underground will compromise safety for both the public and staff. We fully support the action staff are taking and call on the Mayor to engage in serious negotiations to resolve this dispute."

RMT & TSSA members have also received numerous messages of support on behalf of millions of workers, including from the general secretaries of the following unions:

Unite

“On behalf of Unite’s 1.5 million members, I am sending our message of support and solidarity for your members involved in the strike action at London Underground. It is absolutely right for unions to say there can be no compromise on safety and we fully support your action. The Mayor should honour his election promises and put a halt to these cuts.” Tony Woodley, Joint General Secretary

Fire Brigades Union

On behalf of the Fire Brigades Union, I am sending our message of support and solidarity for your members involved in the strike action at London Underground. It is absolutely right for your union to say there can be no compromise on safety and the Fire Brigades Union fully support your action. The Tory Mayor should honour his election promises and put a halt to these cuts; it is clear that the actions of Boris Johnston are a foretaste of the coalition Government’s austerity cuts as ordinary people are made to pay for a financial crisis they did not create. Matt Wrack, General Secretary

NASUWT: Teachers Union

“The members of the RMT and TSSA have the unequivocal support of the NASUWT in this dispute with London Underground. The members of the RMT and TSSA are making a stand in defence of the security and safety of rail passengers and workers. The NASUWT fundamentally believes that security and safety must be of prime importance in all workplaces. The NASUWT calls on London Underground and Mayor Johnson must return to negotiations and make a serious effort to resolve this dispute” Chris Keates, General Secretary

USDAW – Shop Workers Union

“Usdaw members need a properly staffed and well resourced public transport system and we are very concerned by the proposed cuts. Our members tend to travel late at night or early in the morning, outside of shop trading hours, and they value the additional safety and security transport staff provide. Usdaw's 'Women's Journeys to Work' campaign is promoting safe transport options and we urge the Mayor of London to reconsider his damaging cuts and bring this dispute to a satisfactory conclusion.” John Hannett, General Secretary

PCS – Public Services Unions

“We are writing to convey the full support of PCS for RMT and TSSA members on London Underground who are taking action against job cuts. Your principled stand against management’s disregard for safety will be widely applauded. We all face imminent threats to jobs, working conditions, and the services we deliver, from the Coalition government’s draconian plans to cut public spending. We hope that our unions can work together to campaign for an alternative to cuts based on investment for economic growth and tax justice. Please convey our best wishes to your members and let us know if there is any practical support we can provide.” Mark Serwotka, General Secretary

National Union of Teachers

“On behalf of the National Union of Teachers, I am sending our message of support and solidarity for your members involved in the strike action at London Underground. It is absolutely right for unions to say there can be no compromise on safety and we fully support your action. The Mayor should honour his election promises and put a halt to these cuts.” Christine Blower, General Secretary

National Union of Journalists

The NUJ is pleased to support the efforts of RMT members working on London underground, to safeguard passenger safety and the service as a whole. Boris Johnson’s proposed cuts will see scores of ticket office staff made redundant, ticket offices opening hours slashed and safety, particularly at already isolated stations, further compromised. We will be urging our London-based members to join RMT members on their picket lines to show their solidarity with the dispute” Jeremy Dear, General Secretary

.....and there is overwhelming political support for your campaign….

Pensioners’ organisations, disabled groups and passenger groups, including the Independent Passenger Watchdog, London Travel Watch have asked London Underground to reconsider the cuts. For example London Travel Watch has said: “...we know that passengers feel safer and more secure with a staff presence and many passengers - the elderly, those with physical impairments or learning difficulties, as well as those unfamiliar with the system – will still rely on help to buy tickets. We are very worried that their needs will be neglected.”

The former Mayor of the London, the majority of London Assembly members, and numerous London MPs are opposed to the jobs cull and have called on the Mayor to stop the cuts and sit down and negotiate with the trade unions.

The powerful International Transport Workers Federation, representing millions of workers worldwide has expressed full support for the strike action and warned that the Mayors cuts are damaging London’s international reputation and could jeopardise the Olympic Games.
