Job Cuts – London Underground - New Strike Times

This is a letter to all RMT members at London Underground (excluding ex-Metronet), from General Secretary Bob Crow.

Further to my letters of 25th August and 10th September I am writing to advise you that despite the best efforts of your negotiators at the recent ACAS talks management refuse to take seriously our concerns that their proposed job cuts will have a devastating effect on safety. They refuse to accept that these cuts will lead to mass closure of ticket offices, inadequately staffed stations, more lone working, and increased pressure on the remaining staff.

You may have heard that all major engineering work scheduled for the weekend just gone was cancelled as the overtime ban by our members, and those of our sister union, TSSA, begins to bite. Works hit by the ban included major re-railing between White City and Marble Arch, as well as all work on signalling systems.

And do you know what; RMT has calculated that the cost to LU of the cancellations is already at least £15 million, cancelling out the saving the company claims it will make by removing 800 front-line staff.

In order to keep the pressure on management to stop these dangerous and unnecessary job cuts the General Grades Committee has amended the times of the next strikes as follows, and members are instructed not to book on for any shifts commencing between:-

  • 18.29 hours on Sunday 3rd October 2010 and 18.28 hours on Monday 4th October 2010
  • 21.00 hours on Tuesday 2nd November 2010 and 20.59 hours on Wednesday 3rd November 2010
  • 18.29 hours on Sunday 28th November and 18.28 hours on Monday 29th November 2010

The overtime ban remains in place and members are instructed not to work any overtime.

Additionally the General Grades Committee has instructed members not participate in the £5 minimum Oyster top-up, not to carry out higher grade working in a station control room, nor in the role of Station Supervisor, nor to substitute for the Station Supervisor when the Supervisor is not available from:

00.01 hours on Sunday 3rd October 2010 until further notice

RMT members do not want these cuts and nor do the travelling public. The passengers who use the tube have time after time expressed their wish to have booking offices open, a staff presence in stations to offer assistance and make them feel safe and secure when travelling, especially in quiet periods during the day and at night. There is NO justification for these cuts which will make the Underground a less welcoming environment for all concerned.

We will continue to negotiate to try and resolve this dispute and I will keep you advised of developments as they happen.
