Sadiq Khan has power to reverse atrocious decision to keep tube cleaners under control of greedy multinational contractors

RMT calls on Sadiq Khan to end privatisation on London Underground following controversial announcement

The union reacted with fury to the announcement this week, by TfL Commissioner Andy Byford that outsourcing contractor ABM will continue to employ tube cleaners, leaving hundreds of RMT members in the hands of a private company.

RMT called on the Mayor of London to overturn the decision or potentially face another strike on the tube.

RMT seeks resolution of LU's chronic station understaffing - or we will be in dispute

STATION STAFFING - LONDON UNDERGROUND (LUL/14/5)

The Lead Officer has reported that LUL still continues to seek to reorganise and reduce headcount across stations. RMT members took strike action in 2023 under the Defending Jobs & Agreements dispute which was resolved at the time in terms of the impact on stations but since that time, we have experienced a failure to fill vacancies at the same time as passenger levels now exceeding pre-covid period at times, which has led to a chronic state of understaffing on stations and in the revenue department.

As you know, the strike action which had been scheduled for last week was suspended to allow further negotiations in obtaining clarity on what management's position is on protecting those drivers who do not wish to accept new terms and conditions to enter into the compressed four-day week arrangements.

RMT cleaners win sick pay demand

TfL cleaners have made a significant gain, as outsourced contractor Mitie, which took over the contract from 1 April, announced it will implement a company sick pay scheme.

Cleaners will now be entitled to four weeks’ full sick pay.

This would not have been achieved without union pressure. RMT has protested outside City Hall, and lobbied the Mayor and the TfL Board. For the past several years, three key demands for RMT have been travel passes for cleaners, company sick pay, and improved pensions. We have now secured two out of these three.
