DEFEND JOBS – PUT SAFETY FIRST LOBBY OF NETWORK RAIL OFFICES – 11.00, FRIDAY 20th MARCH 2009 90 York Way, London N1 9AG

Members will be aware that in the name of efficiency savings Network Rail is deferring almost thirty per cent of previously planned renewals work for 2009/10.

The union estimates that 1000 jobs could be under threat by the deferrals which coupled with the cutting of scaling back of maintenance regimes and inspections will hugely increase safety risks.

Political Representation

This resolution, proposed by DLR branch, was defeated at the February meeting of the Regional Council.

Although we have a very pro-active parliamentary lobby group of 40 to 50 MPs, they can be hopelessly outnumbered (about 6-1) by MPs guided by other interests and influences.

In stark contrast, trade unionists alone outnumber those in power.

But the potential for us to become the meat and muscle on the skeletal political and democratic frame is far from being realised – a situation that benefits the powerful and greedy immensely.

Condemning the MP’s suspension from the house after he seized the Mace in the Commons chamber, RMT said that Mr McDonnell had been right to label as a disgrace the denial of a vote by MPs on the controversial decision to build a third Heathrow runway.
