Alfie Coleman was 19 when he was apprehended in an MI5 sting while attempting to purchase a Makarov semi-automatic pistol, five magazines and 200 rounds of ammunition, using £3,500 he had saved from a part-time supermarket job.

“The organised working class and trade union movement always opposes division and hatred.”

During the trial, it was revealed he had described some former colleagues and shoppers as “race traitors” for being in relationships with non-white partners.

He had also planned to target a mosque and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan who is Muslim.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: "Wherever fascism and racism rears its ugly head, our union will be there to oppose it.

"In an environment where anti-Muslim sentiment has flourished, one of our leading elected politicians was a target for terrorism.

“When any community or democratically elected politician in Britain is targeted because of their race or religion, it is our duty to stand together in unity, regardless of any differences we have in political outlook.

“The organised working class and trade union movement always opposes division and hatred.”
