RMT members have elected Steve Hedley as our new London Transport Regional Organiser.
The result was as follows: 12,724 ballot papers were issued, 3071 (24%) were returned. 1,772 (58%) voted for Steve Hedley; 1,292 (42%) for Neil Hodgson.
Oliver New, our region's representative on the RMT Executive, said: "Congratulations to Steve Hedley who has been elected Regional Organiser by the members of the LT Region. Now let's unite against the bosses in 2009!"
Steve Hedley said, "Brothers and sisters, I wish to pass on my thanks to everyone who campaigned and voted in the recent election for Regional Organiser. As I was fortunate enough to win, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the other two candidates, Glenroy and Neil, for a hard-fought but fair campaign. I would like also to thank all those who were involved in campaigning for all candidates: your work makes the RMT the vibrant, democratic success that it is. Finally, I would like to thank the RMT members who voted in the election, and encourage those who didn't to vote in future. It is your union: you must decide who serves it. "We face very uncertain times in the immediate future, and I am glad to say that the other two candidates have already offered their support for me in my new role. I will of course serve the region and union to the best of my ability and urge all of you to unite and take the region forward with me. "We need everyone's talents in the battles ahead, and I hope the new year is one of comradeship and endeavour by us all. "Wishing you all a Merry christmas and happy new year. "God bless." Steve Hedley
