RMT Young Members Education Weekend – To Mark And Celebrate The Life Of Jim Connell

From Dave Marshall - Organising Unit

As part of the years Educational events being organised for the Union’s Young Members we have received an invitation from our Irish Trade Union Brothers and Sisters for RMT Young Members to attend a weekend of educational and political activities to explore the life and celebrate the contribution the Irish Socialist and Trade Unionist Jim Connell (27 March 1852 – February 1929) made to our movement.

Born in and politically active in Ireland, but eventually moving to London where he carried on his political activities, Jim Connell was a central figure in the Labour movement’s development, including penning the internationally famous song ‘The Red Flag’.

RMT Young members are invited to apply to attend this event being held in the town of Kels, Ireland. The RMT Young Members attending would travel to Dublin on Friday 4th May and then on to Kels. Over the weekend a full programme of educational and political activities is planned with young Irish political and trade union activists. Naturally there will be a good dash of Irish hospitality arranged for the evenings!

The RMT delegation would travel home on Monday 7th May.

All your reasonable travel expenses and accommodation costs will be met by the Union. If you are interested in attending this event please contact the National Education Officer Andy Gilchrist or Dave Marshall (Organising Unit). (Contact details available by emailing the web team using the links on the left.
