What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.

Executive Report May 2015

CofE REPORT LTRC 30th APRIL 2015

DLR
A ballot is taking place on pay, health and safety issues and reports of members being bullied. The ballot result will be in on the 12th May (The same day as the Network Rail result).

RATES OF PAY LONDON UNDERGROUND

The latest offer is both derisory and divisive. The GGC has called a reps meeting which will be held on the 6th May. We will consider an all grades response to the derisory offer on pay, an effective pay cut, and to the imposition of intolerable working conditions and on a whole number of issues affecting all grades. My view is we should immediately ballot all grades for action and action short of. This would possibly coordinate action with Network Rail, where we are balloting 16,000 members and with DLR and possibly a number of other rail companies.

EVERY JOB MATTERS

We are expecting the company to come back on job numbers in the new station staffing model, but these numbers are likely to be small, way, way below the proposed 1,000 job cuts. We will discuss possible action on this and the rosters from hell and staff displacements.

LU FLEET

We are preparing a ballot for strike action and action short to stop the introduction of agency Trainers.

LU ENGINEERING THALES

We have won a pay increase significantly above the rate of inflation.

GLEN HART, NOEL ROBERTS, ALEX McGUIGAN

All of these members have been sacked or are being threatened with the sack we will discuss on the 6th May how to further these campaigns.

NEW RECRUITS ON TEMPORARY CONTRACTS

It was agreed to produce a letter for all these staff explaining why they need to join a strong union. The RMT.

PETRIT MIHAJ

A demo will take place outside Sodexo HQ on May Day demanding the reinstatement of Petrit. It will join up with the main May Day demo.

INTERSERVE CLEANERS

We are conducting a visit of all our depots to build for strike action to defend our victimised reps including Sister Osagiede who has been sacked.

USE OF FINGERPRINTING ISS (LUL CONTRACT)

Management have breached the agreement agreed at ACAS. We will seek to go back to ACAS. We will also produce propaganda material and produce a ballot matrix

CLEANERS KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

The following was passed at the GGC.
We support the organising of a pilot 1-day ‘know your rights’ event for cleaners in London, to advise cleaners of their rights (including to join a union, pursue workplace grievances, to take industrial action, rights under the Agency Workers Regulations, Health and Safety rights, and others). This event can also be used to information about exploitative practices, to explain the benefits of RMT membership, and to improve the organisation and recruitment of cleaners.

We believe that such an event is best organised and run by London Transport Regional Council, with support from other Regional Councils covering the London area - the London and Anglia, South East, Wessex, and South Wales and West Regional Councils. We therefore recommend to London Transport Regional Council that they go ahead with organising this event, and contact these other Regional Councils for support.

We ask the London Transport Regional Council to keep the General Secretary informed of their progress towards this event, and to give a report to the General Secretary on the event when it has taken place.

We further agree that the union should compile a dossier on exploitative practices used against cleaners on London Underground, and other transport companies in London, including agencies pressuring cleaners to register as “self-employed” or “limited liability companies
We instruct the General Secretary to write to branches and Regional Councils in the London area asking for examples of these practices. The replies to be placed back in front of the GGC, so that we can decide whether to investigate whether these practices are lawful, and present our findings to those responsible for transport in London.

We further believe that in order to pursue our aims of better pay and conditions, and better treatment, for our cleaners - as outlined in the Cleaners’ Charter – this union should work towards a co-ordinated one-day strike of cleaners across all railway operations in London and the South East. We instruct the General Secretary to examine how to achieve this, and report back to the General Grades Committee.”

DONATIONS
So far this year I have donated £300 to produce leaflets and London Calling and £400 to support TUSC Candidates in the forthcoming Elections out of my expenses.
