Testing Of Driverless Trains

We note the report from our LT Regional Council train grades committee. We welcome the committee’s organising efforts, and instruct the General Secretary to offer assistance and resources.

We note the comments concerning which grades may be used to test driverless trains. We instruct the General Secretary to obtain a further, detailed report on this, and to ensure that membership data for all LUL train grades is accurate and up-to-date should we need to hold a ballot for industrial action.

We further instruct the General Secretary to write to London Underground Ltd, Tube Lines and Thales demanding written confirmation of any plans they have to prepare for the introduction of driverless trains (including trains without cabs, or with the driver replaced by an ‘attendant’) including any testing, commissioning equipment or designs, or studying of such systems on other metros. This item is to be placed in front of us on receipt of responses or in any case within 21 days.

We further instruct the General Secretary to contact potentially-supportive Greater London Assembly members to discuss campaigning against the introduction of driverless trains.

London Transport Regional Council, its train grades committee and branches to be advised.
