RMT Disabled Members' Conference 2018

RMT’s first ever two-day Disabled Members’ Conference will take place on Thursday 26 and Friday 27 April, at the Park Inn by Radisson Palace hotel in Southend-on-Sea.

The conference will include:

  • an optional session before conference starts explaining how it works and encouraging new delegates to contribute
  • two excellent guest speakers
    • Marsha de Cordova MP (Labour’s Shadow Minister for Disabled People)
    • Paula Peters (Disabled People Against Cuts)
  • workshops (smaller group discussions) on
    • the social model of disability
    • how accessible is the union?
    • the role of guards and other staff in making transport accessible
    • mental health
    • representing disabled members
  • motions from branches
  • other formal business, including:
    • election of our Chair, Vice-chair and Liaison Committee members
    • deciding where to hold next year’s conference

We will provide delegates with a ‘goody bag’, including

  • all the conference documents
  • information from campaigns we support, such as DPAC, Transport for All, and the Labour Party Autism / Neurodiversity Manifesto
  • merchandise

We want disabled members from throughout the union to attend. Branches and Regional Councils can send up to four delegates each. Branches are responsible for paying delegates’ expenses, but will receive a contribution of £35 per delegate.

  • If you want to be a delegate, raise it at your next branch meeting and/or speak with your branch secretary.
  • If you are a branch secretary, think about branch members who you could encourage to attend. Ask for volunteers at each branch meeting until you have a delegation!

Please also think about motions that your branch could submit to the conference.
