Cleaners & Supporters Right To Protest Curtailed

We note the report on the problems experienced in holding a demonstration on 27 July as instructed by the GGC on 19 July. We are appalled that the right to protest is being curtailed under the pretext of a sporting event, and that the Olympic area is designated ‘private property’ when the Olympics is a major public event funded by public money.

We note the ongoing efforts to identify alternative venues for a demonstration and instruct the General Secretary to place a report in front of us once an alternative is identified.

Cleaners Protest At Stratford Station

RMT cleaners will be holding a protest joined by General Secretary Bob Crow outside of Stratford Station at midday on the day of the Olympic Opening Ceremony - 27th July.

Cleaners will be protesting for a London Living wage and Olympic Bonus. These are the workers who will be clearing up after up to a million extra passengers have travelled each day on London's public transport during the Olympic period.

Burston strike school Rally

From RMT General Secretary Bob Crow

I would like to encourage all branches and activists to attend this year’s commemoration of the Burston Strike School. As in previous years RMT wants to have as large a presence as possible at this important event in the trade union calendar.

We will commemorate the longest strike in history, and celebrate the people who continue to fight for trade union rights, working class education, democracy in the countryside, and international solidarity.

Blog: RMT Members Join London Pride

The RMT had a strong presence at this years World Pride, held in London for the first time. It was also the fortieth anniversary of the first Pride parade held in London, and veterans from what would have been a very different protest for gay rights led what has largely become a celebration of LGBT liberation and values. The RMT group was attended by Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual members as well other members who wanted to demonstrate their and the unions support for equality. This including General Secretary Bob Crow whose attendance was filmed for BBC News. Continue reading to watch the RMTv video

Young Members Education Course Uptake

The RMT young members AGM course took place in Torquay this year, we were able to accommodate approximately 10 young members and it was a very successful event. Report can be found here: http://www.rmtlondoncalling.org.uk/youngmembers

The London transport region was well represented, comprising about a half of the delegates on the course and from cleaner, driver, station assistant, station supervisor grades and also an excellent representation of ethnicities.

Bloggy Report- RMT Young Members 2012 AGM Course

Each year the RMT hold an Annual General Meeting, this is where delegates from each region act as the supreme governing body of the union, alongside this event the RMT also runs a young members AGM educational course.

I joined a group of young members from all over the country who work in a variety of grades, there were cleaners on London underground, supervisors, train operators, p-way, and station assistants- almost half of the group came from London. Most young members there had little to do with the union before this and were curious to see what it was all about.

The course itself was funded by the union in recognition that the union needs to regularly involve as well as educate its young members as they are the future (and the present.) My employer did not pay me for the week away but the union covered my loss of earnings as well as travel, accommodation and food expenses so I had nothing to lose by attending.

Free Film Viewing: The Navigators

The Workers Educational Association's London Region, in partnership with the RMT have organised a free showing of The Navigators.
