Defend the welfare state and public services, march and rally

Bob Crow writes ...

RMT is among many unions and other organisations supporting a major national demonstration to defend the welfare state and public services, initiated by the National Pensioners’ Convention.

The march will assemble from midday at Temple Place on London’s Embankment on Saturday April 10, with the rally beginning at 2pm in Trafalgar Square.

With a general election likely to take place soon after, this is an opportunity to speak out in favour of defending the National Health Service, improving pensions and defending public services against cuts.

The state pension is already inadequate, with one pensioner in four living in poverty , while some seven million households still have a child living in poverty, unemployment stands at two million, and there are ten million adults who are disabled.

At the same time the NHS is already being slowly privatised and bearing the burden of expensive PFI projects and public services are facing massive cuts and further privatisation.

This is an important demonstration which aims to show that working people will not be made to pay for a financial crisis that has been caused not by them but by the unregulated greed of bankers.

I do hope you will be able to bring friends, family and colleagues and I look to see you there on April 10.

Best wishes

Bob Crow, RMT General Secretary
