London Day Of Action Against Tube Cuts Solidly Supported By Passengers

A day of action against tube cuts on Friday (27th March) was solidly supported by passengers and Londoners, with thousands of leaflets distributed from stations across London. RMT and campaign group Hands Off London Transport, jointly organised the day which was joined by dozens of reps and activists from the RMT union, HOLT group and supporters.

Leafleting and demonstrations took place at Bermondsey, Brixton, Camden Town, Elephant & Castle, Gants Hill, King's Cross, Manor House, Oval, Shepherd's Bush, Uxbridge and Whitechapel. Demonstrations were joined by - among others - Labour MP John McDonnell at Uxbridge, Nick Wrack of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition at Elephant & Castle, campaign group Disabled People Against Cuts at Brixton and Students at Central St. Martins (University of the Arts London), currently occupying their college against course cuts, showed their support as well.

The demonstrations are calling for an end of London Underground bosses, and Tory MP Boris Johnsons plan to cut around 900 jobs and close all ticket offices on the tube. In some locations ticket offices have already been shut, and the call was for them to be reopened.

On the day that these devastating cuts were announced, the union had a comprehensive plan in place and immediately initiated industrial action. The RMT has consistently fought against London Undergrounds plans since then, eith strikes, meetings demonstrations and on going negotiations with tube bosses.

We say that tube funding should be increased, with more workers employed not fewer. There has been very little support for London Underground's cuts plan with thousands of people signing a petition against ticket office cuts. London Mayor Boris Johnson also committed to not shutting a single ticket office back in 2010; a commitment which was soon broken.
