Back Pain Survey For Tube Train Drivers

CALLING ALL TRAIN OPERATORS
Do you suffer from any of the following? Bad back, neck, shoulders, wrists, arms, elbows, hands or knees. If the answer is YES to any then please go to the following link below and complete the survey.

In 2013, I undertook the largest survey on the Victoria Line (attached below) with 70% of the Train Operators (both Aslef & RMT members) completing the survey. This was to establish the truth regarding this particular ill-health.

The main findings of the report were:

  • 25% of all reported ill-health is down to this group of sickness but in fact this is just the top of the iceberg and this ill-health is vastly under reported. The main reason is that individuals feel that by divulging it to Management it will affect their future employment with the company.
  • Bad shoulders, necks, knees and backs represented 87% of the total ill-health, with bad backs coming out top of the list with 30% of the total.
  • The company should provide localised 'Hands on treatment' in depots rather than expect individuals to go to Townsend house. This way individuals can gain the necessary treatment anonymously before and or after work.
  • The Drivers' cab environment has a large preventative influence on this level of ill-health. The condition of the seat, footrest, weight of the drivers bag, condition of the track and vibration of the train all influence this to varying degrees.
  • 45% those questioned highlighted that they were in moderate pain when asked - How much pain were you experiencing?

If the company does not address this it will only get worse. Prevention is better than cure to address what could be if untreated - 'The Musculoskeletal Time Bomb'

Please complete the survey and let your colleagues know. Thank you.
