RMT Report On LUL Job Cuts Meeting with Unions

Report from Company Council Joint Working Party number 4

John Leach (RO), Roy Carey & Jared Wood attended for RMT

Phil O’Hare took the chair and explained that he is standing in for Nigel Holness, who is on annual leave.
The minutes from the previous JWP were accepted by all parties.
Unite & ASLEF asked that RMT give the first opening statement.

John Leach gave our opening statement
None of the questions raised by RMT in the three previous JWP meetings have been dealt with by management in any meaningful way.

  • No response to our suggestion that LU and TfL approach the Mayor and central government to secure a restoration of our funding.
  • No proper response to our proposal to end outsourcing despite the success of re-integrating the power supply function on LU. RMT believes this could cut LU’s costs considerably
  • No proper response to our proposal to limit senior management salaries to £100K

This JWP is not fit for purpose. LU says one thing at the JWP but does another. The company is operating a parallel process within which it has continued to implement VS in spite of TU objections and before the consultation has been completed. We believe this to be outside of the law.
In response to TU comments at the previous JWP meeting RMT has received two letters bearing the same date from LU directors. One, from Gerry Duffy states that the VS process will be postponed while the other, from Nigel Holness, states that it will go ahead.

As a result of LU’s approach the consultation process is dead in the water.

RMT also has concerns about the equalities impact of LU’s plans. LU should be ashamed that it is pushing ahead with proposals that its own equalities impact assessment says will make things worse.

  • Company accepts that proposals would have a negative impact of disabled staff
  • Assessment also identifies a negative impact on older staff.
  • The assessment identifies that Black and ethnic minority staff are over-represented in the grades being cut

LU should abandon this project now.

RMT declares a failure to agree. We will write to LU with our further comments.

TSSA RO Stated their position

TSSA has never known a consultation like this one and considers the whole consultation to date to be a sham.

LU has failed to answer our questions and we have no intention of staying for another pointless slide show.

TSSA walked out.

John Leach informed LU that the meeting could not proceed without TSSA. Unite and ASLEF agreed with this.

John Leach will write to LU demanding answers to the questions that have been asked and for full consideration to be given to RMT’s counter proposals.
