What is a National Executive Committee decision?

This article is an 'executive decision' which has been written by the RMT National Executive Committee. The National Executive is the union's governing body in between AGMs. Its decisions set out what the union will do on a particular issue.

These decisions can often be brief, and may be one of several passed over a period of time. To get a better understanding or find out more information about what the RMT is doing, speak to your rep or attend your branch or Regional Council meeting.

RMT Insists Cleaning Contractor Increases Pay In Line With London Living Wage

We note the report of the meeting of our ISS representatives and members which took place on 20 February 2013.

We are appalled that ISS is reportedly not paying the London Living Wage (LLW), having not increased it when the rate was increased. We insist that ISS increase its employees’ wages in line with the LLW uprate at the time that it is uprated, not six months later. We instruct the General Secretary to make urgent representations to ISS, its contracting company Tube Lines, that company’s owners Transport For London, and to the TfL Board, GLA and Mayor, and to seek press coverage on this matter.

"We are appalled that ISS is reportedly not paying the London Living Wage (LLW), having not increased it when the rate was increased"

We further note that ISS intends to move from paper to electronic payslips, and note that the law (Section 8, Employment Relations Act 1996) requires employers to provide a written and itemised payslips. Many of our low-paid members do not have access to electronic facilities and should not be expected to bear the
cost of printing should they need their payslip in hard copy. We instruct the General Secretary to write to ISS expressing these concerns.

We note that our members remain committed to pursuing a decent pay award, and wish to take further industrial action before the end of March, after a period of further organising work, ideas for which are itemised in the report. We therefore instruct the General Secretary to arrange for this organising work to take place and to place a report in front of us with a recommendation for industrial action.

Finally, we refer to the Council of Executives the issue of payments from the Disputes Fund to these members.
