RMT Opposes EDL Abuse of Public Transport

Following a resolution from the London Transport Regional Council, RMT's Council of Executives mad the following decision: That our rules and policies have shown this Union to be consistently opposed to far-right organisations such as the English Defence League.

We instruct the General Secretary to write to every company with which we have negotiating rights conveying that our members have been victims of assault and abuse when far-right organisations such as the EDL and BNP have used public transport and we demand that to protect our members' safety companies ban far-right organisation from using public transport to attend demonstrations and events.

In addition we also list this matter for the agenda of our next discussions with the British Transport Police to register our concerns.

Finally while it is not this Union's policy to call on the state to ban political demonstrations we are concerned to prevent criminal attacks on our members and the travelling public.
